Northern Brewer Smashing Pumpkin

Northern Brewer Smashing Pumpkin

Tis’ the season.  Pumpkin Spice lattes, Pumpkin pies, Pumpkin Oreos, Pumkin Dunkin Donuts, Pumpkin Vodka, Pumpkin Pringles and of course the Smashing Pumpkin Ale homebrew kit from Northern Brewer.  I was given the opportunity to brew this all pumpkin everything fall inspired beer and it was loads of fun, as it was my first 1 gallon small batch.  Below is my brew day and process.  Now let’s get get out the yoga pants and Uggs and get pumpkin wasted!

Northern Brewer Smashing Pumpkin Ale Extract Kit

1

Collect 1.25 gallons of water.  You will want a minimum of a 2 gallon kettle for the boil.

Take the provided steeping grains and put them in the provided muslin sack.  Go ahead and add them to your kettle of water and allow them to steep (10 minutes) as you heat the water. Ensure the sack of grain is not sitting on the bottom of the pot.  Don't boil the grain!unnamed-17

3

After 10 minutes of steeping the grains, remove the grain and throw it away.  Bring the wort up to a boil.unnamed

4

Add the malt extract and hop additions at the approriate time.  I would suggest to stir and add extract at the same time.  You don't want to burn the extract that settles to the bottom.  Stirring while adding will ensure no burnt/scorched extract which can lead to off flavors.unnamed-1

5

Set your timer to 45 minutes and ensure a rigorous boil.unnamed-11

6

Hop time!  Here I am adding 3.5 grams of Cascade hops.  Love the citrus and pine aroma of this hop!unnamed-2

7

Don't forget that spice!  Here I am adding 1/4tsp of the provided pumpkin spice at flame-out aka the end of the boil. Smells so damn good!unnamed-13

8

Chill bro!  Once you have boiled for the allotted time (45 minutes) put the kettle into an icebath to cool the wort down.  Use ice in your sink or if you have ice packs (which is what I used) then feel free to use them. You will want to chill the wort down to 60-70F degrees.unnamed-25

9

While the wort chills, start to sanitize with the provided LD Carlson no-rinse sanitizer.  1 tablespoon per 1 gallon of warm water.  Transfer using the provided auto siphon to another container to ensure all your equipment is nice and clean.unnamed-12unnamed-3

10

Transfer the sanitizer to a container and soak all of your equipment, which includes the 1 gallon fermentor, airlock, screw cap, auto siphon, hose, yeast packet and scissors.unnamed-14

11

Once your wort has cooled, transfer to the 1 gallon fermentor using the auto siphon.  Try to leave any of the hop and malt trub behind.unnamed-23

12

Aerate the wort.  Once you have transferred, close up the fermentor and shake for a few minutes.  This will ensure you give the yeast all the necessary O2 to finish the job.unnamed-22

13

Pitch the yeast!  Using your sanitized sissors, cut the yeast packet and pour half of the packet into the fermentor.unnamed-19

14

Attach the sanitized airlock with a little sanitizer solution in it.  Move the fermentor to your favorite fermentation spot and keep under 70F degrees.unnamed-21

Now… we wait!  Really excited to bottle this one up and enjoy a Smashing Pumpkin Ale.  I really enjoyed brewing this small batch.  It took me a total of 2 hours from boil to chilling.  That is roughly 4 off my typical all-grain brew day.  Now that is something to be excited about!

Brewing this small batch reminded me of simpler days and times when I first started and was extremely enjoyable.  Thank you Northern Brewer for the opportunity to brew my first small batch!

Stay tuned for when we transfer to bottles for conditioning and ultimately, the tasting.
